The Imperial Crown is the ceremonial head of state of the United Empire of Directionland. The monarch holds the title Emperor (or Empress) of Directionland. While the Crown has no direct political power, royal assent is constitutionally required for any bill to become law, acting as a safeguard against abuses such as attempts to suspend elections or raise unauthorized armies. The sovereign also serves as Commander-in-Chief of the Imperial Army and as the living emblem of the realm’s continuity since the founding of the Kingdom of St. Stylinson.
Council of State and audiences
By convention, the Government is made and acts in the Emperor’s name (“His Majesty’s Government of Directionland”). Two standing engagements bind Crown and executive:
- Council of State (Ironday / Friday): The Emperor, Crown Prince/Princess, Chancellor, and Cabinet meet weekly. The Chancellor reports on the state of the realm and presents bills that have passed the Imperial Parliament and the Imperial Senate for the Emperor’s approval and signature (royal assent). The Council is advisory and administrative; it does not replace the legislative process.
- Private audience (Copperday / Sunday): A weekly one-to-one between the Emperor and the Chancellor. This confidential meeting allows the sovereign to offer counsel and the Chancellor to raise concerns in private, maintaining a direct constitutional link between the Crown and the legislature-derived executive.
Role and constitutional position
- Head of state: Symbol of national unity and continuity.
- Royal assent: Required for enactment of legislation passed by the Imperial Parliament and Imperial Senate.
- Safeguard function: The assent requirement and the apolitical status of the Crown provide a backstop against unconstitutional government action.
- Military: Ceremonial Commander-in-Chief of the Imperial Army.
Titles and styles
- Sovereign’s styles: His/Her Imperial Majesty (Emperor/Empress).
- Royal family: His/Her Imperial Highness (Prince/Princess).
- Full formal style of the reigning monarch: His Imperial Majesty, Emperor Alexander XVII, Emperor of Directionland, Eternal King of St. Stylinson, Gandry, and the Divine Province, Defender of the Faith, and Protector of the Realm.
Succession and dynasty
Directionlandese chronicles record an unbroken royal bloodline from the early St. Stylinson monarchy to the present imperial house. The reigning dynasty is House Durias.
The Crown and the branches of government
- Legislature: The Crown neither drafts nor votes on bills; it grants or withholds royal assent after passage by Parliament and the Senate (typically formalized during the Council of State).
- Judiciary: The Supreme Court is the highest court and reviews matters only when an MP or Senator brings a case; the Court operates independently of the Crown.
- Executive: Day-to-day governance is exercised by the Government (Executive), drawn from the elected Parliament and led by the Chancellor; the Crown is kept informed via the Council of State and the weekly audience.
Current monarch
Alexander XVII of House Durias is the current Emperor of Directionland and Commander-in-Chief of the Imperial Army.
