Irian Balewood (Ruul’den: Irianix, often called “Enty”) is an Elvenkind (Ruul’yun) figure from Ruulran whose life and condition are central to the modern history of Mundus. Once a young engineer–soldier in the Ruulran Royal Corps of Engineers, Balewood vanished after an incident at a Dark Energy detection tower roughly a century ago; in recent cycles he re-emerged, altered by Darkblight, and widely known as “Enty.” His recurring role in world “loops,” make him a pivotal character in the ongoing Dark Energy crisis.

Names and aliases

Balewood’s birth name appears in sources as Irianix of House Balewood; after leaving Ruulran’s aristocratic system he used the simpler “Irian Balewood.” In Directionland he is most commonly called “Enty,” a nickname that arose after early witnesses described him as a “Dark Entity.”

Appearance and personality

Balewood is Elvenkind, soft-spoken and reserved. He is typically described with brown hair and white eyes (previously blue), a change attributed to his affliction. Accounts emphasize a gentle, loyal temperament despite progressive symptoms of Darkblight.

Early life and Ruulran background

Letters attributed to Balewood recount an upbringing in Ruulran City within the aristocracy (House Balewood). As a teenager he renounced his rank and privileges (becoming Na’vortha), estranging his family; he worked as a blacksmith’s assistant, then entered military engineering. By age 24 he had become a lieutenant engineer, trained in bowcraft and carrying a personal sword he nicknamed Prickle.

The tower incident, disappearance, and presumed death

Ruulran military reports later unearthed by Valmin state that at 25 cycles Balewood inspected an Energy Detection Tower, uncovered a black mineral at its base, and—after touching it—was thrown back and left catatonic, gasping for breath. His condition deteriorated; he ceased responding to stimuli, then vanished from his hospital room and was declared dead months later.

Transformation into “Enty”

Centuries later by some reckonings—but appearing no older than his mid-twenties—Balewood resurfaced around Directionland as “Enty.” A Ruulden diary titled N’druvath nai (“The Darkness Inside”)—linked to Balewood—describes a creeping corruption after contact with the mineral, consistent with Darkblight, a process now understood as replacement of Light Energy with Dark Energy. Enty’s eyes had turned white; his speech and memory were fragmented.

Role in the time loops

Scholarship by Tobbin and Valmin holds that Mundus has fallen to The Dark One many times; at the end of prior cycles Enty sacrifices himself, releasing Light Energy that resets the world. Tobbin and Valmin uniquely retain memory across loops.
