History

Fort Shagogbot is the most recent duchy in Directionland. Originally a frontier and later an outpost, this duchy is considered the easternmost settlement of the Empire. As a fortress, it is often referred to as the Eastern Shield of Directionland.

The coat of arms features a tower, symbolizing the original fortress and Fort Shagogbot’s role as the Empire’s easternmost point of defense. Two fleur-de-lis represent the two imperial representatives who established Fort Shagogbot.

200 cycles ago, as the construction of the easternmost settlement Fort Shagogbot was finally completed, a new technology was discovered. It was found that by gathering and concentrating Light Energy—a type of energy flow found all over Mundus—a dome of protection could be formed over large areas.

Life and Culture

Within the first decade after the Directionland Royal Railways linked Fort Shagogbot to Simonville, it transformed from a lonely stronghold into a bustling hub of commerce and migration. Tracks brought new settlers—many drawn by the promise of land—and with them the skills to clear fields, drain marshes, and plant grain in the rich floodplains at the fortress’s feet. Today, agriculture is the beating heart of the duchy. Wide, gently rolling farms sprawl from the ramparts, growing hardy grains—barley, rye, and a tough strain of wheat—that thrive in the region’s cool nights and sun-bleached days.

Livestock also roam the fenced pastures:

  • Sheep and goats, prized for wool and cheese, are driven to high meadows in summer and sheltered in communal barns come winter.,
  • Cattle and pigs furnish meat and dairy; their manure helps keep fields fertile in the lean years.,

This marriage of fortress and farm has bred a distinctive Shagogbot character: self-reliant, industrious, and fiercely proud of the land they’ve tamed. Perhaps the sweetest testament to that spirit is the duchy’s world-famous Shagogbot cookie. Bakers there take the local barley flour and enrich it with honey from borderland hives, a pinch of warming spices, and—legend has it—a dash of Light Energy for extra resilience. These dark-gold biscuits travel the rails to every corner of the Empire, and MPs like Lukas Battlan even joked that they’ve kept him going through long days in Parliament.

Between the annual Harvest of Lights festival—when entire fields are illuminated by lanterns under the protective dome—and the steady rhythm of planting and shearing, life in Fort Shagogbot balances martial heritage with pastoral abundance. Though its walls still stand ready against any threat, the duchy’s true strength now lies in its fields and the hands that tend them.

Demographics

Events and Festivals

The Harvest of Lights in Fort Shagogbot coincides with the Empire’s autumnal Harvest Festival. In Mundus’s calendar this falls in Alessasun—the tenth muund of the cycle, equivalent to our October. Each year, villagers and farmers around the Eastern Shield gather under the newly cast forcefield dome during Alessasun (October) to celebrate the bounty of the fields and light up the night with lanterns and torches.
