Tobbin Valeside is a Ruulran engineer and a rare Landling whose body and senses are strongly attuned to Light Energy. He is most often seen traveling and working alongside Valmin Thornvalley, with whom he shares a close personal and professional bond.

About

Tobbin often comes across as bubbly, chatty, and seemingly tireless, but his cheerfulness is also a practiced shield. As a Landling, he was born with animal ears and a bushy tail, and his bright amber eyes have become one of his most recognizable features. In Ruulran society, Landlings are widely treated as sacred proof of the divine, a belief that shaped Tobbin’s childhood as much as his education did.

Tobbin is known for his ability to read auras and sense the flows of Light and Dark around people, places, and constructs. It is a rare and difficult gift that makes him invaluable during strange encounters and volatile investigations, but it also places him uncomfortably close to forces that can harm him.

Those who spend time around Tobbin cannot miss the scars. He bears a prominent scar over his right eye and several smaller scars across his body. Scarring is considered unusual for a Landling due to the high concentration of Light Energy within them, and some fear it may be a warning sign that Mundus’ ambient Light is weakening.

Biography

Birth and early life in Caleria

Tobbin was born to Yulin and Qorrin Valeside, both scholars of Light Energy affiliated with the Ruulran Royal University. His birth was treated as a major event in Caleria, as Landlings are rare and publicly celebrated in many Ruulran communities.

Several years later, Tobbin’s younger brother, Meklin, was born. Meklin struggled under constant comparison to Tobbin and came to resent the attention Tobbin received for being a Landling, even though Tobbin never sought it.

Meklin’s departure and disappearance

At 18, Meklin renounced his privileged title, took the name Meklan, and left Ruulran for Directionland. He settled in Grelian as a fisherman, but shortly after his arrival he was reported missing and has not been found.

Tobbin fears Meklan may have fallen into a Dark Energy rift. If true, Tobbin believes there is no safe way to follow or retrieve him.

University and engineering work

Tobbin followed his parents into academic life, specializing in engineering and becoming a skilled civil engineer. As a Landling, his talents were also sought for specialized work: as a Druinithæ’Rathil, he was frequently asked to measure and diagnose energy leakage in Ruulran’s defensive tower systems and related Light-based infrastructure.

During his studies at the Ruulran Royal University, Tobbin met Valmin Thornvalley. Their partnership began professionally, grew into a deep friendship, and by graduation the two were inseparable.

After university, they worked in Ruulran City on Crown contracts, helping refine and improve Lightmeasures and other state projects. Over time, both came to suspect their work was being redirected toward prohibited Nether and Dark Energy research. For Tobbin in particular, the implication was terrifying: Dark Energy exposure is exceptionally dangerous to a Landling.

Flight from Ruulran

Tobbin and Valmin eventually fled Ruulran. In circumstances the pair do not discuss openly, they encountered Irian Balewood in a forest and convinced him to travel with them.

Crossing the border into Directionland required forged papers and careful performance. Tobbin later credited Valmin’s calm tone and persuasive speechcraft for getting them through Ruulran’s strict controls.

Life near St. Niam

Tobbin and Valmin settled in a treehouse outside St. Niam. From there, they have pursued an increasingly dangerous line of work: attempting to construct a time travel portal to reach a period when the cult known as the Order of the Darkened Flame operated more openly, in hopes of uncovering why they seek to free Rathsern from his Nether prison.

Tobbin also created an Allay named Rixim, a being formed from pure Light Energy. Rixim assists with precision tasks and serves as a third perspective during complex technical debates.

Loopbreaker

Tobbin and Valmin are currently working on a portal that would allow them to travel back in time, alongside their familiar, Rixim. Their bond appears to have deepened after a rift attack on Kingsvalley triggered a surge in Dark Energy that nearly killed Tobbin and several others.
