Landlings (Ruulden: Druinithæ’Rathil, "Connected Ones of the Forest and Land") are rare Light-touched people of Mundus born with an unusually strong natural attunement to Light Energy. They are not a separate nation, caste, or bloodline, but a rare variation of birth that can occur anywhere in the world.
Landlings are most commonly recognized by their animal-like features, especially ears and tails, though the exact form varies from person to person. They are widely associated with heightened sensitivity to the flow of Light and Dark, and many become Aura Readers. Their strong affinity to Light also makes them especially vulnerable to corruption, for concentrated Dark Energy and exposure to the Nether are particularly dangerous to them.
In Ruulran, Landlings are often regarded as miracles of the Mother's favor. In other realms they are less ceremonial in status, but remain uncommon and often the subject of fascination, reverence, or superstition.
Etymology
The Ruulden compound Druinithæ’Rathil literally means "Connected Ones of the Forest and Land." The term reflects an old association between Landlings, the natural world, and the currents of Light that flow through Mundus.
The common Directian word Landling is the usual exonym used across Directionland and beyond.
Overview
Landlings are best understood as a rare Light-infused variation of birth. Though many common beliefs treat them as blessed children or living miracles, most scholarly writing describes them as unusually Light-aspected Munduskind whose bodies and spirits develop in uncommon ways.
They may be born in any realm and to any family. No proven hereditary pattern has been established.
Characteristics
Physical traits
The most common outward signs of a Landling are animal ears and a matching tail. Recorded examples most often resemble mammalian forms such as wolf, feline, raccoon, or bear traits. In all reliable accounts, Landling features are mammalian in nature; no accepted record describes Landlings with bird, reptile, fish, or insect features.
The exact appearance of these traits varies from individual to individual. Ear shape, tail size, fur pattern, and coloration are not fixed, and hair color does not necessarily match the fur of the ears or tail.
Some Landlings possess bright amber eyes, especially those with strong aura-reading talent, though ordinary eye colors are also possible. More unusual manifestations are known, but are rare. These include:
- Horns, usually of forms not clearly matching any known beast
- More animal-like eyes
- Claw-like nails or hands
Such features are uncommon, and the more extreme the manifestation, the more likely it is to be remarked upon in local rumor and folklore.
Energetic attunement and abilities
All Landlings possess an unusually strong natural connection to Light Energy. This does not always manifest in exactly the same way, but it commonly results in heightened awareness of aetheric imbalance, sensitivity to consecrated places, and unusual reactions to the presence of corruption.
Many Landlings become Aura Readers, capable of sensing the flow of Light and Dark around people, objects, and places. This makes them especially valuable in times of magical instability, Nether incursions, or outbreaks of corruption.
Healing and resilience
Landlings are known to heal quickly from lesser bodily injury. Cuts, abrasions, and other damage to the skin often mend faster than expected, and visible scarring appears to be less common among them than among other peoples.
This should not be mistaken for invulnerability. Landlings can still be killed by severe wounds, damage to the organs, overwhelming trauma, or the depletion of the Light that sustains them.
Vulnerabilities
Because they are so strongly aligned with Light, Landlings are particularly endangered by heavy exposure to Dark Energy. Corrupted places, Dark surges, and prolonged exposure to the Nether are all especially dangerous to them.
A Landling may endure ordinary hardship as any other mortal, but the intrusion of Dark into body or spirit is often more severe in them than in others.
Rarity and birth
Landlings are rare throughout Mundus, though not so rare as to belong only to legend. Exact figures are unreliable, but more than one Landling is likely to be born per cycle on Mundus.
They can be born anywhere in the world. However, most known Landlings are recorded in Ruulran. This is commonly attributed to the realm's religious customs, for certain households are known to participate in rites and devotions intended to make a Landling birth more likely. No ritual is proven to guarantee such a birth, and no scholarly consensus exists on whether these customs truly influence the outcome or merely reflect Ruulran's stronger attention to such children.
No verified mechanism of inheritance has been established. Landling birth is therefore generally treated as a rare Light-infused occurrence rather than a predictable bloodline trait.
Reproduction
Landlings are not believed to produce offspring. Though they may be born to ordinary parents, no accepted account records a Landling successfully continuing their own line.
This has led many theologians to describe them as gifts of Light rather than a people that perpetuate themselves in the ordinary manner.
Cultural status
In Ruulran
Within Ruulran, Landlings are often treated with exceptional reverence. They are commonly spoken of as miracles of the Mother and may be regarded as signs of divine favor upon a household. This veneration exists alongside the realm's rigid social and religious order, and Landling births may attract both prestige and intense scrutiny.
Ruulrani custom also preserves several old rites intended to encourage the birth of a Landling child, though their true efficacy is disputed.
In Directionland and elsewhere
In Directionland, Landlings are generally integrated among the realm's peoples rather than set apart by a formal religious status. Their unusual gifts, especially aura reading and sensitivity to energetic imbalance, make them valuable in matters involving sanctums, corruption, and the shifting balance between Light and Dark.
Elsewhere in Mundus, attitudes vary. Some communities view Landlings with admiration, while others regard them with suspicion, superstition, or fearful fascination.
Known abilities
- Aura Reading: The perception of Light and Dark flows around people and places.
- Energetic sensitivity: A heightened awareness of aetheric imbalance, sanctified spaces, and corruption.
- Rapid healing: Quicker recovery from many surface-level injuries than is typical among other Munduskind.
Known examples
Language
- Ruulden endonym: Druinithæ’Rathil
- Common Directian exonym: Landling
The Ruulden endonym preserves the old conceptual link between Landlings, the wilds, and the land itself.
